Maryknoll Sister Marilyn Belt, originally of Flint, Michigan has lived in and served in Bolivia for the past 42 years. She entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1961 after having earned her R.N. from St. Joseph School of Nursing and her B.S. in Occupational Therapy from Eastern Michigan University. In 1966 Sister Marilyn was assigned to Riberalta, Bolivia, where she worked until 1976 as Supervisor and teacher of Bolivian nurses and lay workers, as well as serving as hospital supervisor. She has been in charge of the Occupational Therapy Department of CERECO, a center for rehabilitation in Cochabamba, Bolivia, since 1981. Sister Marilyn provides occupational therapy services to two schools of special education and has trained 8 young Bolivian women to work as assistants in occupational therapy, providing therapy for children and adults with physical and mental dysfunction.
Sister Marilyn asked ProsthetiKa to assist in Bolivia. She recognized the dire need for more technical training to increase the scope and quality of prosthetic and orthotic services available. In the on-going work in Bolivia Sister Marilyn does all of the logistics and coordinates the clinical activities in country.
