Above-the-Knee Amputee – Unilateral: Entering a Car – Prosthesis First

Instructions:
Entering the car, leading with the prosthesis is an advanced activity, requiring strength, coordination, and confidence. A safer and more conservative approach is to sit first, and then swing legs into vehicle.
  1. Approach the car, using the door to help balance.
  2. Swing the prosthesis into the car. The prosthesis must go into the car as far as possible.
  3. As prosthetic knee flexes, sit on seat.
  4. Bring "sound" leg into car.
